Questions for a medical weight-loss visit

Ask useful questions about care options, support, costs and how progress is measured.

Clarify the goal

Begin with what you want to change in daily life. You may care about energy, mobility, lab values, confidence with activity, or a weight-related goal. Naming the outcome helps the clinician understand the support you want.

Ask how health history and current medicines may shape the conversation. Bring a current list, including over-the-counter products and supplements.

Ask how assessment works

Useful questions include: What information are you using to build my plan? What health factors should we consider? Do I need lab work, referrals, or coordination with another clinician?

Ask what each result means in plain language and what would change the plan. You should know what is being measured and why.

Ask about each option

If nutrition support, activity planning, counseling, medication, or a procedure is discussed, ask what it involves, its intended role, possible drawbacks, alternatives, and how it fits your history.

Ask about cost, coverage, access, follow-up, and what happens if the first approach is not a good fit. Practical questions are part of an informed choice.

Leave with a next step

Ask which one or two actions matter before follow-up, how to contact the office, and what changes should be reported. A clear next step is more useful than a long list.

Bring notes or a support person if that helps. This is your care conversation, and it is reasonable to take time to understand your options.

Ask for the plan in writing

A short written summary can make it easier to remember appointments, preparation, and questions to bring back. It also helps you share accurate information with other clinicians when needed.

Before you leave, confirm the date of the next check-in and the best way to report a question between visits. Knowing the route helps the plan stay active.
