Questions to bring to a joint-care visit

Understand what to ask about evaluation, non-surgical options, your goals and expected progress.

Begin with what matters

Write the activity you most want to do more comfortably or confidently. It may be walking, work, sleep, stairs, exercise, or simply moving through a normal day without planning around the joint.

Then write what gets in the way. This keeps the visit centered on your experience instead of a scan, a label, or a treatment name alone.

Ask what is being assessed

Useful questions include: What movement or health factors are you assessing? What findings would change the plan? Is there anything in my history that should change the options we discuss?

Ask for findings in plain language. You should understand the difference between what is observed, what is suspected, and what needs more evaluation.

Compare approaches clearly

If more than one path is discussed, ask what each involves, its purpose, and how success would be measured. Ask what you would do between visits and when the plan would be reassessed.

For a procedure or referral, ask about preparation, recovery considerations, alternatives, and timing. A decision is easier when you know both the clinical rationale and how it fits work, home, and activity demands.

Bring decision-changing information

Prior imaging reports, procedure records, medication and supplement lists, and notes on earlier therapy can save time. Include what you tried, how long you tried it, and what you noticed.

If a question remains after the visit, write it down and contact the office. A good care conversation can continue as new information becomes available.

Take your time with the decision

You can ask for written instructions, bring another person to a later discussion, or take time to compare options. Understanding the plan is part of choosing it.
